DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY (DMS)

The U.S. Department of Labor says that ultrasound school graduates are part of the top 16 most sought after professionals in the nation today.

By 2014, the ultrasound technologist demand will increase by 35%. Ultrasound diagnostic imaging is one of the fastest emerging fields in the healthcare industry. There is a very high demand for the ultrasound technologist’s unique experience and skills. Ultrasound therapy is fast becoming the diagnostic method of choice in many areas of medicine.

Ultrasound is perhaps most often associated with pregnancies, but now diagnostic medical Sonography is used to scan everything from the nervous system to the digestive system, blood vessels, tumors, the eyes and more. Health care professionals often prefer ultrasound to other diagnostic scanning techniques (such as radiographic technology, or x-rays) due to the safety of this non-invasive technology and its ability to capture such detailed images.

Getting through ultrasound school will take a lot of motivation and discipline. The program is time consuming and requires a lot of hard work. Ultrasound is a highly sensitive field of medicine. It takes a lot of training to become licensed in the field; however, the demand for people with an ultrasound license is extremely high. Ultrasound technologists are an important part of the medical team.

With an Diagnostic Medical Sonography certificate, people can work in a number of places. The field of medicine involving ultrasound is expanding, as its technology is becoming more advanced. For example, a certified ultrasound technician can work in a sports therapy office, or in an OB/GYN doctor’s office. There are many specialties involved in ultrasound.

Casa Loma College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography specializes in abdomen and small parts, obstetrics and gynecology. Upon completion graduates may take additional courses in vascular and echocardiography.
