MEDICAL ASSISTANT (MA)

The Medical Assistant Course prepares you for “healthcare’s most versatile profession”! This course will prepare you to become a multi-skilled healthcare professional, performing a wide range or roles within a doctor’s office or clinic. You will become proficient in administrative and clinical tasks and will be viewed by the doctor’s as vital and necessary in the productivity of their office. Students will be introduced to and learn to perform patient, specimen, and instrument preparation; perform routine urinalysis; perform results for basic hematological, serologic tests; collect and label biological specimens including blood, urine, sputum and throat cultures; process, prepare, store, deliver and dispose of specimens along with collection equipment; perform tests that aid with diagnosis and treatment; prepare and administer medications; run electrocardiogram and record results; prepare and maintain treatment areas; assist with exams and treatments. You will also learn medications and dosage calculations and be introduced to the effects of medications on the body system. In addition students will learn the skills and knowledge to manage a medical front office including interacting with patients, communication skills, processing medical correspondence, completing accounting transactions scheduling appointments and learn the basic knowledge of the national diagnostic and procedural coding systems and the importance of processing and filing claim forms correctly.

Program Overview And Course Description
The Medical Assistant Program is 750 hours, (30 weeks) plus a 160 hour externship program. . The Medical Assistant Program is 750 hours, (30 weeks) plus a 160 hour externship program. It is comprised of six modules of 125 hours each in addition to the externship and must be taken in its entirety for a certificate of achievement. Modules are taken in sequence, however, the college reserves the right to modify the sequence should the need arise.
 

The complete program qualifies the student to take either the Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant certification exams. The maximum number of students per class is 15 students.

  • Physical Examination of the Patient& Medical Emergencies
  • Phlebotomy (limited to medical assistants) and Body Systems Part 1
  • Body Systems Part II & Clinical& Laboratory Procedures
  • Pharmacology: Calculations & Dosage Administration &
    Body Systems Part III
  • Externship

Requirements:

Applicants enrolling into the Medical Assistant program must meet the minimum general requirements for admission to the college in addition to the following:

  • Be 17.5 years of age or older
  • Pass the Standard Assessment Exam with a score of 552 or higher
  • Students not possessing a high school diploma are eligible to take the Ability to Benefit exam.
