What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical assistants are health care providers who perform administrative and clinical tasks to support the work of medical doctors and other health professionals. Medical assistants keep the offices of doctors, medical centers, and clinics running smoothly. Depending upon their employer’s needs, they can perform clerical, administrative, or clinical functions—or all three.

Clinical functions include routine tasks and procedures such as measuring patients' vital signs, administering medications and injections, preparing and handling medical instruments and supplies, and collecting and preparing specimens of bodily fluids and tissues for laboratory testing; clerical and administrative tasks recording information in medical records-keeping systems, coding and filling out insurance forms , scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services, and handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.

What is Required of a Medical Assistant?

A medical assistant must treat their patients with tolerance and empathy. A medical assistant must be neat, and well groomed must have good communication skills as many times they will be called upon to explain the doctor’s instructions; and must be able to prioritize and be organized.

Our program is 750 hours with an additional 160 hour externship. It is comprised of six modules of 125 hours each including such subjects as Medical Office Billing, Physical Examination of the Patient, Medical Emergencies, Phlebotomy, Body Systems, Pharmacology as well as others that will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to become a competent and skilled member of the healthcare team.

Upon completion of the program you will receive a Diploma in Medical Assisting and join the growing ranks of Casa Loma College distinguished alumni, in addition to the prominent community of Medical Assistants.
